今年七月，慈善組織 Band Aid 在英美等地舉行 Live 8 演唱會，媒體對舉行的目的、內容、與結果提出一些質疑，報導中也不免提到二十年前發起的全球援助非州運動，以及 1985 年在英美等數國同步舉行的 Live Aid 演唱會。
雖然報導對今年的 Live 8 諸多批評，倒也喚醒我的二十年前記憶，在唱片行看見了 Live Aid DVD ，趕緊回家上網找到比較便宜的價錢買了。一套四片 DVD，全部看完要十小時，內容包括：
- 1984 年 10 月英國 BBC 電視新聞報導伊索匹亞飢荒
- 1984 年底英國歌手聯合錄製義賣的單曲 MV “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”
- 1985 年 1 月美國歌手聯合錄製義賣的單曲 MV “We Are The World”
- 1985 年 7 月 13 日，在英國倫敦與美國費城同日舉行的現場演唱會 Live Aid
- Live Aid 演唱會當日，在世界其他地方同步舉行募款演唱會的片段
- Live Aid 之後， Band Aid 基金援助非州具體行動的紀錄片
以上內容是我花了幾天看完這四片後才了解的，本來只單純想欣賞當年的演唱會，全看完了才知道這次發行的 DVD 也是募款的一環。Band Aid 基金會二十年來已經在援助非洲飢荒上貢獻了美金一億四千四百萬，還在繼續工作中，非州的飢荒無法完全根除； Band Aid 除了關注飢餓與愛滋問題外，並持續挖掘更深的問題，現在發起想幫助消除第三世界國家因為不平等貿易而欠下的永遠還不起的外債，也是 Live 8 的主題。
1984 點燃第一根火柴的是 Bob Geldof （The Boomtown Rats 樂團主唱），他現在有個爵位啦，常被稱為 Sir Bob Geldof。他看了BBC新聞報導非洲飢荒有所感觸，邀集當時同在英國流行樂壇最當紅的樂團與藝人，由他與 Midge Ure （Ultravox 樂團主唱）作曲，以 Band Aid 名義製作出版了聖誕節單曲 “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” ，算是慈善單曲的先例。那張單曲趕上聖誕節前購物季節推出，他說服整個供應鏈從錄音室、歌手、唱片公司、到賣場等等全部放棄營利，連英國政府都迫於輿論壓力不得不捐出從那張單曲課到的加值營業稅。Do They Know It’s Christmas? 這首歌不僅推出就跳居冠軍，光是在穩居第一名的五週就內賣出 300 萬張，募到好幾百萬英鎊（這個英國的歷史紀錄後來被紀念黛妃的單曲銷售超過）；也在美國豋榜，全球銷售量不少。後續在 1989 年與 2004 年分別因應流行曲風重新錄製出版，不妨參考 2004 年底出版 的 Band Aid 20 宣傳網站。
接下來美國也掀起另一波狂瀾，由Harry Belafonte （成名曲是那首 Day-O Day-O 的香蕉船）發想援助非洲，他的經紀人建議效法英國藝人做法，於是由 Lionel Richie 與 Michael Jackson 一起作出 “We Are The World” ，號召大堆頭正當紅的美國歌手，在 1985 年一月葛萊美獎典禮當晚錄音並製作 MV，當年三月以 USA for Africa 名義推出市面義賣，也是很快的竄上排行榜，當了四週冠軍，光單曲就賣了 750 萬張，年底還得了葛萊美三個大獎，單曲加其他商品大約也募了五千萬美金。USA for Africa 這個組織也是到現在還存在，目前的重點在協助非州消除飢餓與對抗愛滋，今年初也出版一個 We Are the World 20 週年 DVD 義賣中。
那時我還在美國讀書，隔個大西洋，知道英國那首歌但沒有被洗腦，至於美國這首的確把我們都洗腦到極點，每天電視收音機狂打此曲，聽到前奏的噹噹鐘鳴就知道又來了，打開電視，那個 MV 每天總會看到十來次，每個歌手順序我們都能背出來，總之就是那段時間的超級芭樂歌。
我買到這個 Live Aid DVD，馬上播放 We Are The World 的 MV，事隔二十年，雖然芭樂一如往昔，可是重賭當年巨星們風采還是令人很興奮。天哪，都忘了他們當年如此年輕，差異最大的當屬 Michael Jackson，他當年還是黑皮膚圓鼻子娃娃臉捲捲頭呢，後排大合唱的 Jackson 家族成員還沒有 Janet Jackson 呢。Ray Charles 去年已經去逝了。看到 Cyndi Lauper 一頭三色髮，七年級小輩非常大驚小怪當年就如此染色。

然後趕緊播那首 Do They Know Its Christmas 的 MV ，看到 Paul Young, George Michael, Sting, Boy George 的年輕俊俏模樣，震撼更大；二十年後的現在他們當然也沒有老醜不堪，但是的確會讓人體會什麼叫作歲月。打鼓的 Phil Collins 雖然那時髮量已經稀少，但是還是滿臉光滑年輕，現在都已經因為耳疾告別演唱了。

然後再分好幾個晚上看完英美兩地演場會，真是好看，出來唱的全都是當年領先排行榜的團體與個人。許多當紅歌曲，當年只在 MTV 台看過 MV，這反而是第一次看見他們現場演唱的台風。
英國的表演比較是一個一個團輪流，好不好看還真是各憑本事，我個人覺得 Paul Young, Queen, David Bowie, The Who 都能把場面弄得很熱鬧。不過，令人感嘆世事多變的是Queen 的主唱 Freddie Mercury 已經不在了。另有一團 Beach Boys 也是死的死散的散。
美國的表演比較花俏搞噱頭，譬如 Phil Collins 在英國與 Sting 合唱過後立即乘協和號飛到美國上台演唱（協和號現在也已經停飛了），譬如由 Hall & Oats 唱了自己的歌，就留在台上繼續幫其他藝人伴奏合音，包括 Mick Jager 與 Tina Turner 的壓軸歌。
有些歌許久沒聽到，像 Dire Straits 出來唱 Money For Nothing，這個團我不熟，可是前奏與間奏由 Sting 高喊數句 “I Want My MTV”，這首二十年前的歌突然從腦裡蹦出來好像昨天才聽過似的，瞧瞧當年收音機與 MTV 洗腦作用多厲害。
Madonna 真是讓人懷舊啊，半屏山髮型、大耳環、 花褲子、大衣服，配上 Mick Jagger 的黃衣綠褲，真適合結伴參加前一陣子受爭議的台客搖滾。Sting 的白棉衣卡其褲放在二十年後仍然有型有看 頭，好些位男歌手，七月大熱天穿著大風衣、皮大衣、皮靴、毛外套，頂著厚重長髮滿頭汗還真耐的住。
其他像 Elton John, George Michael, Duran Duran, REO Speedwagon, U2, Eric Clapton 等等至今長青的藝人，也都是讓這張 DVD 物超所值的原因。再說，這樣以搖滾領軍的流行樂壇也已經不存在了，今天再辦一場一樣陣容的演唱會，可能要讓嘻哈歌王教母等領軍才行呢。
DVD 附的說明書，說是當年 Band Aid 決定只做現場轉播，不出版做錄影帶，所以二十年後改變主意要出版 DVD，還真是經過一些翻箱倒櫃，英國 BBC 留有母帶，但是隨便丟在倉庫裡，美國負責拍攝的遵守規定已把母帶毀了，還是 MTV 找出側錄帶才有美國演唱會紀錄。多虧現在數位修片技術厲害，整個 DVD 看起來挺好的。不過，因為當年衛星傳播不穩定、因為現場停電、因為歌手把麥克風電線扯掉了（Bob Geldof 自己）、因為母帶本來就沒有拍到等等原因，有些人的演出完全找不到了，有些人唱了三四首也只拍到兩首。總之，說是當年辦跨國演唱會很不容易，因為沒有網路、沒有行動電話、甚至連傳真都不普遍還要靠 Telex，現在還能重現出來的都算很珍貴了。
不過，不深愛搖滾的朋友請勿嘗試，整個演唱會從頭到尾都很吵的喔。
